About Us

The Nora Sandigo Children Foundation (NSCF) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization based in Miami, FL, dedicated to supporting immigrant children and families. Founded in 1989 during the Nicaraguan Revolution, NSCF was initially created to address the needs of the Nicaraguan immigrant community. Over the years, it has expanded its reach, becoming a beacon of hope for immigrant families facing separation due to deportation.

Our History

The foundation’s journey began with its first case: a Peruvian mother facing deportation who sought guardianship arrangements for her children. This pivotal moment laid the foundation for NSCF's mission to protect and care for children separated—or at risk of separation—from their immigrant families.

NSCF played a significant role in advocating for immigration relief, contributing to the social movement that led to the enactment of the Nicaraguan Adjustment and Central American Relief Act of 1997 (NACARA; 111 Stat. 2160). This landmark legislation provided relief from deportation for thousands of Nicaraguans, Cubans, Salvadorans, and Guatemalans, further cementing the foundation's legacy as a leader in immigrant rights advocacy.

Our Mission

Caring for and protecting children separated or at risk of separation from their immigrant families by ensuring they are in a safe, healthy environment.

Through legal guardianship, NSCF ensures children do not enter the foster care system, preventing permanent family separations. Nora Sandigo, the foundation’s founder, personally holds legal guardianship for over 1,200 children, offering them stability, care, and connection to their families.

Our Impact

  • Advocacy for Immigration Relief: Instrumental in NACARA's passage, providing relief for countless immigrant families.
  • Guardianship: Legal care for children to prevent family separations and foster care placements.

Comprehensive Support: Offering resources such as housing, education, transportation, and emotional support to immigrant families in need.
